A Typical Day at The Hebrew Corner

Its more than just Hebrew!

  • Jewish holidays
  • Bible
  • Jewish history
  • Tefillot (prayers)
  • Israel
  • Jewish songs
  • And Hebrew!

Hebrew Corner pupils typically attend a two-hour class once per week. Class begins with an hour of Hebrew, then moves onto fifteen minutes of shirim (songs and prayers), and finally spends about forty-five minutes on Bible, history or an approaching holiday.

Early classes learn to read Hebrew and to master simple words and sentences, discovering how Hebrew works as a living language. Our small classes afford individual attention and diversified teaching approaches. As children get older, they focus on tefillot (prayer book texts), additional parts of Hebrew speech, and eventually to Torah reading and its cantillation.

Jewish song is an important component of our curriculum. Singing together fosters community spirit and teaches important concepts about the holidays, Hebrew, ethics, Israel and prayer.

Bibles study begins with the stories of the Torah and then moves onto the Prophets, and still later progresses to the study of Jewish history or the mitzvot (commandments). When holidays approach, we turn our attention to the teachings and traditions of the festivals. We supplement book learning with viewing videos, making crafts, and even light cooking of holiday treats.

Due to our small classes, each child gets individual attention from Hebrew teachers at every class. The latest learning software enriches our Hebrew and Bible curriculum. Several of our textbooks come with a CD ROM brimming with exercises and games. We also use other software and Jewish education websites so that Hebrew Corner children learn that Jewish learning is fun. We have designed our own prayer text CD ROM which allows the student to hear and see the text on the computer in short, byte-size phrases.

There are more features to tell about the Hebrew Corner, including our success in teaching learning-challenged pupils, and our late starter program.

We are here for you when it is time to celebrate your childs bar or bat mitzvah. We officiate at the location of your choice. We have a Torah scroll, ark and prayer books. You will enjoy a service that is accessible, participatory and led much of the time by your child.

We also join together in High Holiday services, sukkah parties, Hanukkah parties, Tu Bishvat seders, Purim celebrations, matzah baking, felafel in honor of Israel Independence Day, blintz and barakas for Shavuot, and an occasional Shabbat Experience.

Our religious approach is simple: you and your family should enjoy Judaism on your own terms.
